Change of direction- Studio practice

Recently I’ve been trying to spend as much time in the studio as possible in between big mural projects. I’ve been questioning what my personal art actually is and so I’ve been playing around with various loose ideas and new mediums to try and figure this out. Working on commercial-ish murals jobs all the time is great to learn technical painting skills but also confusing when trying to create your own fine art practice.

I’ve never really spent extended periods of time working on my own art or even thinking about just that. There’s always a job or a graff wall to paint. I do love jumping around from thing to thing and having such a varying week though, no complaints there.

I think I’ve already got slightly bored of just portraits alone on walls and I’ve also realised that they don't make for the most interesting canvas works. I enjoy artists that have quite busy or weird compositions that tell more of a story and are less conventional.

I would like to create more interesting scenes or even abstract pieces in a way, that still include figurative or portraiture elements.

It’s a constant struggle to know what you want your art to look like or if it’s even authentically you. However, its fun to experiment and the endless possibility’s are quite exciting. By no means am I set on a path yet or even happy with what I’ve produced at all but it’s definitely enjoyable. Lots of work to do!

I look forward to the prospect of being in the studio more though and would love to get a nice body of work completed in the coming years in order to have a small solo show.
